Society for Museum Archaeology Resources and Training Project (SMART)
The Society for Museum Archaeology (SMA) has secured £49,413 from Arts Council England (ACE) in response to its application to the ACE Subject Specialist Network Funding Programme 2018-2020.
The project will deliver four workshops nationally, enabling museum staff and volunteers to develop the skills to work with archaeological collections proactively and confidently across collections care, interpretation and public access. It will also ensure toolkits and guidelines and are updated and accessible, and the project will also deliver a mentoring programme to connect museum staff and volunteers with subject specialist expertise to facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen expertise in museum archaeology.
The South East Museum Development Programme are proud to have supported the bid, and will be working with the SMA to deliver one of the national workshops in the region, and will also work with the SMA to develop the pilot mentoring programme and deliver it in the South East region later in 2019.
The overall impact of this training programme will be to help museum staff to acquire and develop the necessary skills to unlock the potential of archaeological collections for a wide range of audiences. The project will also enable SMA to reach more non-specialists, and to promote its role as a source of advice and support to all those responsible for curating archaeology collections regardless of their background or areas of expertise.
