What is the Museum Designation Scheme?

The Designation Scheme identifies and celebrates outstanding collections, which deepen our understanding of the world and what it means to be human.

Since 1997 the Designation Scheme has identified the best collections held in museums, libraries and archives across England. The founding aims were to raise the profile of these vital collections and encourage everyone to safeguard them.

The award stimulates pride, support and cohesion within an organisation. It raises the profile of the collection nationally and internationally, and can open the door to new revenue streams, including Arts Council programmes.

Become a Panel Member

The Designation Panel is made up of respected members in the fields of arts, cultural heritage and historical research.

Arts Council England is seeking high level individuals with strong collections experience, as well as individuals who have been closely involved in promoting England’s cultural history.

The role of Designation Scheme Panel member provides an opportunity for you to use your experience to ensure appropriate decisions are made: recognising the most significant collections held outside of the National institutions and ensuring these collections are safeguarded and developed for wider enjoyment, learning and research.

Interviews will be held in Birmingham on 5 & 6 July.

The closing date for applications is: 6 June at 5pm
