HeadStart Kent, 'Pay if Forward' grant opportunity

Kent County Council has been piloting a project over the last year called HeadStart which has been funded by the Big Lottery. The project is designed to help equip young people to deal better with difficult circumstances in their lives and build resilience to prevent them experiencing common emotional and mental health problems.

As part of the HeadStart project there is some funding available to voluntary and community projects who are supporting young people and families called Pay it Forward.

Pay it Forward

Pay it Forward is a small funding opportunity to support original ideas for activities, events or resources that aim to make a difference. It is about groups and individuals doing something that will enable other people to do something for someone else.

Successful ideas will improve the resilience of 10-14 year olds and/or their families and be fully co-produced. Ideas will need to also achieve one of the following criteria:

  • Enable young people, families or communities to develop ideas and activities to get coping strategies
  • Promote and achieve helping others
  • Involve a broad range of young people
  • Be a local provision embedded in the community of your target audience

Some ideas for projects might be:

  • Community improvements
  • Local groups that maintain the local area such as environmental groups
  • Funky Bins campaign encouraging young people to recycle
  • Fundraising events for community projects supporting young people
  • Using funds to provide reduced cost activities for families
  • Taster days or activities of local groups / organisations to promote and encourage more to be involved
  • Providing ‘relief groups’ for young people in existing local settings
  • Campaigns to combat issues affecting young people and their communities

How much can be applied for?

The maximum amount that any one proposal can apply for is £1,000. Organisations can submit up to three proposals.

Total Project Value: £20,000

How to apply:

There is a short application form which should include an introduction to the project either in writing, a video lasting no more than 2 minutes or a comic sketch. The application will include details of:

  • What the idea is
  • Who the target audience is?
  • Who will be delivering the work?
  • How it could be delivered?
  • Where it will be delivered?
  • How will they know it has made a difference?
  • Which of the criteria you will be fulfilling?*

The applications will be assessed by a panel of young people and they may want to visit your project as it takes place, to evaluate first hand if the project has worked. This will be supported by an evaluation form that will be given to successful applicants to complete.

HeadStart will also be holding an evening event where all successful applicants will come together to share positive stories from their projects.

  • Applications should be submitted by Monday 14th September 2015
  • Decisions will be made and applicants notified by Monday 5th October 2015
  • Projects must be completed by Thursday 31st December 2015

*Meeting more than one criteria should be made clear however applications will be considered on the quality of the idea, not the quantity of the criteria they fulfil.
