Hampshire Big Theme 2017: Jane Austen. Get involved!

The annual Hampshire Big Theme is an exciting collaboration of exhibitions, performances, installations, events and digital experiences led by Hampshire Cultural Trust. Each one explores a topic inspired by a key anniversary or popular culture with a unique Hampshire twist!

The first Big Theme, entitled 1914, launched a five year programme of activities in 2014, commemorating the First World War. We are now planning for the years ahead.

2017 Big Theme: Jane Austen

The 2017 Big Theme commemorates the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen in Winchester. Austen lived for most of her life in Hampshire, and the aim is to remind, not only those living in the UK, but visitors from around the world, of the impact that this had on her. Living in a time of economic, military and social upheaval, she wrote timeless classics about the lives of the gentry and explored their psychological depths. There are numerous ways to celebrate Austen’s life and writing therefore, describing both the life of people in Georgian and Regency Hampshire, and in subjects covered in her books, such as the Navy, the Church, music and dancing, food and transport.
