Fire at Clandon Park House, Surrey

Many you will now be aware of the devastating fire that occured yesterday afternoon at the National Trust property, Clandon Park, near Guildford, which is also home to the Surrey Infantry Museum.

The Surrey Heritage statement reads as follows:

"Following the fire at Clandon Park House yesterday, the Surrey Fire and Rescue team are still in attendance and working through their normal procedures - damping down the building to ensure that the fire is completely extinguished, and investigating the building structure to identify any areas that may be unstable.

Once this process is complete they will allow the National Trust and Surrey Infantry Museum staff to enter the building to assess the damage and carry out any remaining  salvage work.

The National Trust have their own contingency plans and resources to deal with emergencies such as this, and their team is on site. They have asked visitors to stay away for the time being while the emergency services carry out their duties.

We can't at this stage say any more about the house and museum collections but we are of course ready to lend whatever assistance we can alongside our museum colleagues from around the county and region. The emergency services are aware of this and have advised that they feel that all is in hand at this stage."

This is a truly shocking event and our thoughts are with the National Trust team, the Surrey Infantry Museum staff and Trustees, and the members of the Surrey Fire & Rescue Service.
