The first Swale Heritage Forum gets off to a great start

On Saturday 7th March, over 50 people from across the district of Swale came together for the first Swale Heritage Forum, managed and led by the Swale Museums Group.

Chair of Swale Museums Group Allen Whitnell (Sittingbourne Heritage Museum) and other members from the Group planned the session in response to increased interest in heritage from the wider community. The Forum aimed to raise the awareness of Swale’s heritage groups, the value of working together and appealed to those interested in history to find out more about the support that is available to them.

The session began with a networking lunch followed by short ten minute presentations from:

  • Mark Bateson,  Community History Officer, KCC Libraries, Registration and Archives
  • Sarah Corn,  Museums Development Officer, SE Museum Development Programme
  • Emma Jenkins, KCC's Kent Children’s University
  • Katie Rees, Voluntary Arts England
  • Sarah Williams, Swale CVS
  • Allen Whitnell, Chair of Swale Museums Group
  • Richard Emmett, Historical Research Group of Sittingbourne

This marks the next step in the development of the Swale Museums Group (SMG), who recently commissioned a Forward Plan to be written; have revised their vision and developed a new Terms of Reference.  They are hopeful that the Forum will become an annual event, and are collating feedback from participants as to what sort of support they would welcome; positive feedback has already been received:

"Just a short note to let you know how much I enjoyed Saturday's meeting and to say how well I thought it went... the range of speakers was good and the length of time they had was just right... Congratulations."

The SMG have set up a blog for the Forum, see and will be making available all the presentations from the day.

There is lots more going on in Swale...
