Title of Project

National Arts Fundraising School residential course

10-15 November 2013

What was the Project aim/s?

The NAFS course aims to cover every area of fundraising, and equip attendees with the relevant skills to tap into new sources of income.  The course was suitable for both candidates new to fundraising and those wishing to refresh their skills and learn new techniques.

What was the impact of the project?

The immediate impact was that I came away from the course feeling much more confident having gained a new set of skills, and feeling more focussed and equipped to develop a new fundraising strategy for the Gallery.  This is really important at this stage of our development as we are currently fundraising not only for our current core exhibition and community programmes, but also for Catalyst endowment funding.  I have also shared my learning with my colleagues and we use the workbook on a regular basis.

What went well and what didn’t go well?

The course went very well, the location in East Sussex was also excellent. Both of the two main trainers, Bernard Ross and Julia Bellingham, were excellent, as were the other specialists.

The hotel was a superb venue with all the right facilities, and the rooms and food could not be faulted - all this added to the overall experience.

I made some very good contacts during the week and have been in contact with them since.  The networking opportunities and learning from other organisations was also invaluable.

I now have more confidence when speaking with my colleagues and Board members.

Top Tips

Be prepared for an extremely full-on week - there really is no time at all for anything other than focussing on the training course.  Also be prepared to speak up during all of the sessions and enjoy the learning experience.

Don't eat too much - very tempting as the food is so good, but unless you go for a run every morning, you will get very little time for exercise!

What are your plans for the future?

Since returning from the course last November, we are now implementing a new Patrons Scheme and setting up a new Corporate Membership Scheme.  The course definitely helped in giving me the confidence to approach people in a new way.  I am also producing an updated Fundraising Strategy for the future.
