“Unpicking the New Curriculum”- A Training Session for Teachers and Museum Educators. A one day sharing conference focusing on changes to the National Curriculum – open to members of the local BOBLI group

What was the Project aim(s)?

1. To better inform and share knowledge between local Museum Educators about the proposed changes to the National Curriculum.  A key feature was to invite teachers in for consultation.
2. To allow us to strengthen the network by raising the profile of the group
3. To allow us to review and evaluate our status as a group and help us to move forward to where we want to be as a group.
4. If, successful, it will give us more confidence to apply for future funding for joint projects

What was the impact of the project?

What new skills your staff and volunteers gained?

Clarification of the changes to the new primary school curriculum, which take effect from September 2013.
A shared understanding of the possible implications of the changes on the education programmes group members currently offer.
A chance to discuss the changes with local teachers. Knowledge sharing with colleagues which will help to consolidate our individual education programmes

How has your organisation become more efficient and/or effective?

The training day was planned in February in order for Education Officers to plan for delivery from September 2014.  In this respect, the benefits of the day are still being realised. We hope to look back at the training day and evaluate again at a future meeting at the end of the academic year.

How do your visitors gain a better service as a result?

We hope that by responding to curriculum changes members will continue to be able to offer teachers a high quality museum education offer, tailored to our individual museum collections.

Do your visitors have greater enjoyment from their experiences?

Time will tell, but despite quite radical changes to the new history curriculum, members will still be able to offer a wide ranging and high quality offer to local schools.

What are your organisation’s plans for a sustainable and resilient future as a result? Evaluation of the day has shown that the day has had a positive effect in strengthening the network. Several members did volunteer to help apply for future funding applications. From the evaluation on the day, the majority of members (around 20) responded that they would be more likely to attend future BOBLI meetings.

What went well and what didn’t go well?

Tell us about the timing of the project for you and you partners?
The project was planned for February to allow for the full details of the new primary curriculum to be issued and disseminated and early enough for members to plan any changes before the end of the summer term and then publicise to teachers before the new academic term in September. This timing seems to have been appropriate.  Several participants felt that a follow-up session was needed to reflect on the changes and how well we were adapting to them.

Was the consultant/trainer the right person for the job? Why is this?
Our facilitator/trainer Sandra Stancliffe, Head of Education & Interpretation, English Heritage was an excellent choice. She was informative and engaging in her presentations and encouraged and facilitated useful conversations about the relevant topics. Participants were grateful that all her notes will be distributed after the event.  Participants were happy with “ an excellent mix of listening and active workshop discussions”.

How did you encourage everyone in your organisation to engage in the project?
The proposal for a training event on the curriculum was discussed during the consultancy period for the new curriculum at previous BOBLI group meetings. So there was a demonstrative need for a training event. Invitations for the event was sent to all current BOBLI group members, as well as offered more widely through the MDO network.

What are your plans for the future?

How will the learning from this project be implemented in your organisation?

Individual members from the BOBLI group will implement the changes to their own museum sessions.  Ideas will continue to be shared with colleagues through the BOBLI network and meetings.

What further work has this project identified, and how do you plan to address this?

The training session needs to be followed up with a review at the end of the academic year.
